Alan Hutton joined Rangers on 4 September 2000, and made his first team debut two years later against Partick Thistle.
It was his only appearance that season, but he went on to make 11 appearances during the 2003-04 season. He scored his first goal for the club that season on 23 March 2004 against Dunfermline Athletic.

In the 2004-05 season he helped Rangers to a domestic double by winning both the Scottish Premier League and League Cup, making 12 appearances. The following season, Hutton broke his leg in a SPL match against Kilmarnock and he was sidelined for eight months. The full back returned for the 2005-06 season, but he has to compete with Fernando Rickson which limited his appearances to just 23.

Hutton played a total of 122 games, scoring 4 goals for Rangers in 8 years at the club before signing for Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window in the 2007-08 season for an estimated £9,000,000. He went on to make his debut in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United but struggled to hold down a place at the club.

On 1 February 2010, Tottenham agreed to allow the Scot to join Sunderland on loan for the second half of the season. Despite a successful loan spell the two clubs couldn’t agree a fee, so Alan returned to the North London club. He went on to make 23 appearances in the 2010-11 season for Spurs and despite being there first choice, Harry Redknapp made it clear he would be allowed to leave for the right price, because of the up and coming Kyle Walker.

On 31 August 2011, Aston Villa confirmed they had signed Alan Hutton on a four year deal, along with fellow Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas, who arrived on a year long loan.

Alan made 31 appearances in the 2011-12 season but really struggled to settle at Villa Park.

In the 2012-13 season he had loan spells with both Nottingham Forest and Spanish side Mallorca. In 2014 he had a loan spell with Bolton Wanderers in the Championship.
