Ellis also revealed other foreign businessman, including derided former Liverpool co-owner George Gillett, were also looking over Villa before he eventually sold to Randy Lerner in 2006.

“George Gillett is a nice guy, he bought Liverpool, but he was also borrowing money,’’ he said.

“When Randy came to see me three times from New York, he persuaded me he had cash.

“He had been a student at Cambridge University and had followed Aston Villa.

“I trusted him after talking to him. I realised he was a good man.”

Ellis’s last act as chairman was to appoint Martin O’Neill as manager, with a pledge from Lerner that he would receive £20 million to invest in new players.

So he was sad to see the Northern Irishman – appointed boss at Premier League outfit Sunderland last month – leave Villa in 2010, despite reaching a League Cup final.

“I was disappointed when Martin left,” added Ellis.

“It was me who brought him to the club and gave him the contract.”

Mysteriously, he said he was keeping close-lipped over the ‘real reason’ for his departure, adding: “I can’t tell you the reasons why he left because you’ll print them.”

Ellis made his millions in the 1950s and 60s as a pioneer of the package holiday business, before taking over at Aston Villa from 1968 to 1975.

He later returned to the board just after the club’s historic European Cup win in 1982.

And the former football supremo said only his failing health forced him to relinquish the reigns of his beloved team in 2006.

He added: “The only reason I sold Aston Villa was my health.

“I always said I’d never sell and that they’d have to take me out feet first from Villa Park.

“I’ve had prostate cancer, which was a malignant tumour and I was in hospital for 20 days, a few years back.

“Six months later I had cancer of the bowels, but that was non-malignant.

“Then I had a triple heart bypass, which really affected me.

“But I’ll stagger on and you can be sure I’ll be around this time next year to see my Villa.”

Ellis was one of scores of Midlanders honoured by the Queen for their charity work.

The generous businessman said: “Naturally I’m very honoured.

‘‘But I put it down to the support I’ve had over the years, not just from my staff and Aston Villa, but from all my friends who have helped me.

“I feel that this award is due to them.’’

He added: “I’m humble. I came from the bottom, there was no silver spoon in my mouth.

“I had to support my mother because my father died when I was three years old.

“I later had to deliver milk in the morning before I caught the 8.25am train to Chester for secondary school.

“From then onwards, I’ve not found a substitute for hard work.”

And Sir Doug, as he will be known from today, revealed he was looking forward to meeting the Queen after she awarded him an OBE in 2005.

He added: “I’m looking forward to seeing Her Majesty again and having the sword across my shoulders.

‘‘It will be a great day.’’

Birmingham City owner Carson Yeung was arrested by Hong Kong police’s financial investigations unit and first appeared in court in June.

He was bailed by the Eastern Court in his home city after being charged with five counts of money laundering.

A trial is expected to take place later this year.

“Each smallest act of kindness, reverberates across great distances and spans of time --affecting lives unknown to the one who’s generous spirit, was the source of this good echo. Because kindness is passed on and grows each time it’s passed until a simple courtesy becomes an act of selfless courage, years later, and far away. Likewise, each small meanness, each expression of hatred, each act of evil.”
