Villa Fantasy Football Preview – The Strikers

It’s not long now until the new season gets underway, so now is the time to start thinking about who to include in your fantasy teams.

Strikers are very important in Fantasy Football and are usually the most expensive players to purchase. Today, we’re going to be focusing on our strike force.

Firstly, let’s look at Christian Benteke

Christian Benteke

After an excellent début season in the Premier League, the Belgian hitman bagged 19 goals in the league – even though he signed on deadline day in the summer transfer window and missed out on a few early fixtures in the season.

There’s no doubt Benteke’s profile has increased, first with his impressive scoring record and then with the ‘transfer’ saga that followed this summer. He’s looked very good in pre-season and that’s why I recommend having Christian Benteke as your second or third choice striker.

Let’s look at the stats:

In the Premiership Fantasy League, he’s rated at £9.0million. That is a big increase from last season, where he was only rated at £7.4million.

Next up is Gabby Agbonlahor

gabbyagbonlahorOn his day, Gabby Agbonlahor can be any defender’s nightmare. His acceleration is his biggest asset so defenders usually give him a bit of space and don’t like to get tight to him. Last season, Gabby scored 9 goals in the league, some of which were vital to Villa’s safety.

Looking at his history in the game, Gabby Agbonlahor is a very good third choice striker. He averages 11 goals a season but his game is not just about goals. His assists tally is excellent for a striker. Last season he got 6 assists but, in my opinion, he will get close to, if not surpass, double figures in assists this season.

Next up, Andi Weimann

Last season was a breakthrough season for Villa’s academy graduate Andreas Weimann. His hunger and desire to run into space, drag defenders away and willingness to play for the team made him a starter in Paul Lambert’s team sheet week after week. He scored 7 goals and provided 4 assists last season.

After signing a new contract this summer, he has had a very good pre-season so far, scoring some nice goals and also providing assists. If Lambert continues with his 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 formation, I think Weimann will grow into his role of being a right forward, while also rotating with Benteke and Agbonlahor during matches, and will continue to score goals.

He is an excellent third choice striker for your fantasy team.
Paul Lambert proved himself a wise man in linking Weimann with Agbonlahor and Benteke to form a terrific trio of Villans. Bagging a healthy 125 points, the man from Vienna is a real footballing dynamo.
You have to remember that Aston Villa have a double game week in the first week of the season, which means that if you choose players from Villa they have a chance to get double points as they play 2 games, against Arsenal and Chelsea. This also means that Villa will not play in week 3 of the season.
