The magic of the FA Cup returns today and Aston Villa will play host as Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich come to town.

Both clubs could be forgiven for not really caring about today’s game given their current positions in their leagues but then again its a nice little distraction.

Villa have a pretty impressive record in this competition having won each of their last five games at Villa Park, scoring three goals in each game. Another impressive stat is that Villa have beaten the last nine sides who they have come across who are ranked lower than themselves.

We are Aston Villa fans however and take nothing for granted so we must be at our best if we are to progress and be in the hat for the next round.

Overall the two teams have met 55 times with Villa edging it with 22 victories to the Tractors Boys 19. The last meeting came in 1996 in the quarter final of the FA Cup when Villa won 3-1 with goals from Mark Draper, Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke.

Team News

Aston Villa: Darren Bent (hamstring), Charles N’Zogbia (knee) and Gabby Agbonlahor (thigh) could all take some part after returning to training this week.

Ron Vlaar’s mysterious calf injury keeps him on the treatment table alongside Ashley Westwood (ankle), Richard Dunne (groin), and Nathan Baker (hamstring).

Karim El Ahmadi is also unavailable as he is away at the African Cup of Nations with Morocco.

Ipswich: Mick McCarthy will be without the club’s top goalscorer DJ Campbell who returned to his parent club QPR following his successful loan spell.

Patrick Kisnorbo could be in line to make his debut after signing for the club on a 1 month loan deal from Leeds.
