Ezri Konsa was finally called up to the full England squad following Aston Villa’s win over Fulham on Sunday, just as he was debating a short break with his partner.

Konsa, who is also eligible to play for Portugal, spoke of his chance of an England call-up on Tuesday stating:

“I knew I had a lot to work on in my game. Only recently now, the last two seasons, we’ve excelled at Villa and that part of it has helped me become the player I am today.

“I knew my time would come, but it was just a matter of when. I was patient, and I’m proud and me and my family are really happy.

“I’ve always believed in myself, always backed myself. I’m really enjoying my football now at the moment and the rest is taking care of itself.”

The 26-year-old is in line to face Malta and North Macedonia with England in the Euro 2024 group qualifying stage. The media couldn’t help themselves when they asked the defender if he would be buying Euro 2024 tickets or hoping to feature himself.

“I think that’s every player’s target, to go to major tournaments and play for your country. So that’s definitely on my mind and definitely something I plan on doing.”

Will Southgate pick Konsa?

It’s one thing being called up, which seems almost impossible unless you are part of Southgate’s chosen few but it’s another being picked to play. Let’s face it, the recognition is long overdue for the defender who has been consistent over the past 12 months.

The call-up only came once Lewis Dunk withdrew from the squad through injury. Konsa was called up alongside Rico Lewis and Cole Palmer and will join his fellow Aston Villa teammate in the squad.

England will be expected to beat both Malta tomorrow night and Macedonia on Monday so Southgate could opt to give the Villa defender some game time, even if it only comes off the bench.

He will be up against Manchester United’s Harry Maguire, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.

One thing is for certain, Villans will be backing their man alongside Watkins.
