Emiliano Martínez was named as the winner of the prestigious Yashin Trophy last night fending off competition from the likes of Manchester City’s Ederson.
The Yashin Trophy was created in 2019 and was named after former Soviet Union goalkeeper Lev Yashin. The winner is selected by former Ballon d’Or winners to the best-performing goalkeeper in the world from the previous 12 months.
The World Cup winner who was also shortlisted last season has gone on to have lots of personal success since his initial £15 million move to Aston Villa in September 2020.
A list of his successes includes:
- Aston Villa Player of the Season (2020-21)
- Copa América Champion (2021)
- Copa América Golden Glove (2021)
- Yashin Trophy – 6th Place (2021)
- Finalissima Champion (2022)
- Fifa World Cup Champion (2022)
- Fifa World Cup Golden Glove (2022)
- The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper (2022)
- Ballon d’Or – 15th Place (2023)
- Yashin Trophy (2023)
Following his most recent accolade the Argentine paid tribute to his teammates and both club and country.
“I’m full of emotion to have won this, without my teammates at Aston Villa and in the Argentina national team, this wouldn’t have been possible – this moment in my career.”
Martínez signed a new five-year contract with Aston Villa in January 2022, until 2027.
Congratulations Dibu!
