Player Ratings: Aston Villa 3-4 Southampton

It was two defeats from their last two games as Southampton beat Dean Smith’s Aston Villa side 3-4 at Villa Park this afternoon.

Two free-kicks by James Ward-Prowse were sandwiched by goals from Jannik Vestergaard and Danny Ings for the visitors. Late goals from Tyrone Mings, Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish wasn’t enough for the home side.

Another disappointing performance from Villa at home, we rate the players.

PLAYER RATINGS

Emiliano Martínez 5 (out of 10)

It is hard to say too much about the former Arsenal keeper today who was outdone by four goals that he didn’t really stand a chance with. The issue is, he did concede four goals in a game where Southampton only had four shots on target.

Matty Cash 5

Another poor game from the right back. He had a hard time last time out against Leeds and struggled again today. I can’t decide if we need to try and help him as sometimes he is doubled upon. Gave away the free-kick for a silly handball which the resulting free-kick ended with a goal. Booked.

Ezri Konsa 5

Quiet by his usual recent standards. Gave the ball away a few times. The defender will want to forget about the last two games and get back to his recent high standards.

Tyrone Mings 7

Just like his defensive partner, gave the ball away cheaply at times and struggled with Southampton’s high intensity pressing tactics. Was able to get his name on the score sheet through a header in the second half.

Matt Targett 6

Matt Targett tried and linked up well with Jack Grealish at times. Defensively, he was caught out of position a few times and will have better games. Managed four key passes on the day.

Douglas Luiz 7

The Brazillian looked more like himself after a poor performance against Leeds. He had more interceptions (3) than anyone else in the team and contributed to two key passes. Assist.

John McGinn 6

Not his usual self, similar to how he was against Leeds. I am starting to wonder if he needs a rest after his heroics earlier in the season for both Villa and Scotland. He did finish the game with the best pass completion rate (88.5%) in the team though.

Ross Barkley 6

I often wonder if games against high pressing sides we should look at adding more legs to the midfield with the possible inclusion of Conor Hourihane or Marvelous Nakamba. Barkley tried today going forward but doesn’t offer much defensively for me.

Jack Grealish 9

I do often wonder where we would be without our Captain. Everything Villa does, despite the new additions this summer still come through Grealish. He assisted the Mings header, won a penalty and scored a goal of his own. If only he was Mason Mount eh, Gareth?

Watkins penalty helped with his Player Ratings

Ollie Watkins 7

I do feel sorry for Ollie Watkins, at times he seems way to isolated so finds himself coming wide or dropping deep to get involved. Only managed two shots on goal, including the penalty he scored. Has 6 goals from 7 games for Villa so far this season.

Bertrand Traore 4

Wasn’t on the pitch long enough before being replaced by Trezeguet with an injury.

Trezeguet 6

His energy and effort are missed badly when he doesn’t play but his final ball often lets himself down. He tried and tried and on another day may have scored one of his four efforts on goal.
