Jed Steer has been rewarded for his efforts in helping Villa’s return to the Premiership with a new contract. The goalkeeper saved two penalties in the Playoff Semi-final against West Brom has signed a four-year deal until 2023.
Stere is one of four goalkeepers in the first team at Villa Park. If rumours are to believed, that could soon be three with Lovre Kalinic being linked with a move to Nantes. The other two keepers at the club are Orjan Nyland and Matija Sarkic. The later is still young and has a bright future ahead of him while Nyland picked up a nasty injury that ruled him out of the back end of last season.
Steer is currently and rightfully Dean Smith’s number 1. I would personally give him the opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League. After how Steve Bruce treated him, to come back and do as well as he did deserve nothing less than a chance in the top flight.
The 26-year-old was sent out on loan to Charlton Athletic despite starting our first game of the season against Hull. He was recalled by Smith in the January transfer window and the rest is history. His professionalism was excellent and we all saw just how important he was in our promotion campaign.
Butland rumours
I don’t think any of us have been able to escape the rumours linking Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland with a move to Villa. If we believe the reports, it will cost Villa around £20million for the England goalkeepers services.
It would be very harsh should Steer be dropped and made to play second fiddle to Butland. With Orjan Nyland returning from injury also, it will have the Norway goalkeeper in 3rd choice. Personally, I thought he was getting better towards Christmas and made some excellent saves, one at Preston springs to mind.
Steer made some amazing saves, including one against West Brom at home where he flicked Jay Rodriguez’s goalbound strike onto the crossbar. His distribution is decent and his shot stopping has been good as well. There is no reason to suggest Steer doesn’t deserve a chance in the Premier League, and I will be disappointed if he is pushed aside for another Keeper.
Kortney Hause
In other news, Kortney Hause has signed for Villa after we chose to take advantage of the option to sign him after his loan deal. This is an excellent signing as we saw how good he paired up with Tyrone Mings last season, who we are still hopeful to sign.
