In recent days Aston Villa have been linked with a move to bring Christian Benteke back to Villa Park. It is no real surprise that the rumour mill is picking up with the January transfer market looming. The real question is, is there any truth in the story or is it idle gossip?
Benteke has struggled since he left Villa Park. He is hardly getting any game time at Crystal Palace and has failed to recapture the form that earned him a big money move to Liverpool. It is no real surprise that a former player has been linked in these circumstances. Add to the fact he only has eighteen months left on his current contract but do Villa need him?
Benteke at Villa
The Belgium striker enjoyed three wonderful years at Villa Park. I personally loved him. He was our star player and a constant threat for any opposition. Benteke scored fifty-two goals in eighty-nine Premier League appearances in Claret and Blue. The 28-year-old was Villa talisman and probably the main reason for us staying in the Premier League for as long as we did.
The manner in which he left Villa did leave a sour taste in some supporters mouths. While other would gladly welcome him back with open arms. The way he linked up with Jack Grealish is something I am sure excites the faithful. Things have changed however and Benteke is not the same player.
He managed just 10 goals in 42 appearances during his time at with Liverpool. Things haven’t improved too much at Palace either. 20 goals in 74 appearances and only 3 in the last two seasons.
Does Villa need Benteke?
Things haven’t just changed for Benteke. We are now in the Championship and currently have Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea. Would Smith want another striker on loan or would he prefer to give game time to Scott Hogan and Keinan Davis?
I don’t feel that we need a player who is massively out of form. Or do we need to take another chance on a player on a big wage?
Smith may feel he wants to go two up top and choose to go with Abraham and Benteke. Should we get promoted and we could get him on a smaller wage, I maybe would consider taking the risk. He has lost his form but I would be hopeful that returning to familiar surroundings could change this.
That is in the potential future though. Right now, I am unsure we need him and I can’t see this rumour being anything more than hear’say.
