Aston Villa vs Birmingham City
Sky Bet Championship
12:00 – Sunday 11th February 2018
Villa Park, Birmingham
Second City rivals Aston Villa and Birmingham City will meet at Villa Park at mid-day today for the 126th Birmingham derby.
Steve Bruce’s men are on a fine run of form and they know a win would leapfrog them above Derby who could only manage a draw with Norwich yesterday. Villa will be silly to think this is just another game though. The form book goes out the window when we play our rivals from across the City.
Blues are also on a good run of form themselves as they look to secure their future in the division. Steve Cotterill has guided his side to victories against Reading and Sheffield Wednesday in recent weeks and he will have his Blues side well up for this one.
Villa currently have the second-best home form in the division while Blues have the second worst.
Other than the long-term injuries it is believed that Aston Villa has a full squad to choose from however there are a few rumours that Scott Hogan may not make it due to illness. These are unconfirmed at this stage.
Lewis Grabban and Gabriel Agbonlahor will both hope to play a part as Colin Calderwood both stated they are both close to full fitness and itching to feature.
Blues are expected to recall David Davis and Maikel Kieftenbeld who were both rested for the League Cup defeat to Huddersfield in mid-week.
Jonathan Grounds is out with a knee injury while there will be a late fitness test for Jacques Maghoma who has been suffering from a groin injury of late.
- Aston Villa hasn’t lost in 11 league games against the Blues.
- The last time City scored at Villa Park, they lost 5-1 in April 2008.
- Bruce hasn’t lost a game against Blue since leaving them (W6 D1).
- Villa hasn’t won 7 consecutive league games since February 1990.
The game is a complete sell-out. Both sides have sold their full allocation. There are a few spares doing the rounds on the black market but I wouldn’t advise buying.
