One more win

If this season has taught me one thing it’s that I should set my expectations for Aston Villa exceptionally low. My optimism turned to hope this campaign – and even that has gradually diminished. I now go to a game looking for a goal or a good performance rather than a victory. The truth is I knew that we were going to lose last week. I also know that we will lose a fair few more games before we say our inevitable goodbye to top flight football.

So, thirty games in to the Premier League season, what do I want to see from our football club?

I want to see a win. Somewhere in our remaining fixtures I want to see us get all three points for what would be only the fourth time this season. This year, an opening day victory was finally built on by a mid-week victory against Crystal Palace and, in February, we made it three wins by beating Norwich City 2-0. Looking past how obviously depressing this is, I want to know if we can do it just one more time.

Today’s game against Swansea City is probably one of our best opportunities to do so. The Swans currently sit sixteenth in the table, eight points clear of seventeenth-placed Sunderland, which could help us. With the threat of relegation not an immediate one, they don’t have as much to play for this evening. Having said that, they will see a home game against us as a perfect opportunity to all but guarantee Premier League survival.

If we don’t manage an improbable win this evening, there are a couple of games in which we might have a chance. A home match against A.F.C. Bournemouth is winnable, however good their form has been this season, and our last match at Villa Park against Newcastle presents us with another opportunity.

Of course, we may go on to win more than one of our next eight games. I hope we do, although you’ll forgive me for trying to be realistic. We’re all weary after this season and now all I want is to experience a Premier League win one last time. I want to watch ‘Match of the Day’ and look forward to our game coming on before we’re banished to Channel Five.Who knows? Maybe we’ll be reminded what winning feels like once more tonight.
