Wolves Archive

Villa are a bigger prospect than Wolves and Blues for WBA.

Villa are a bigger prospect than Wolves and Blues for WBA.

West Bromwich Albion have rated there game with Villa a much bigger game than there local derby with Wolverhampton Wanderers and there other Midlands derby against Birmingham City.

The Baggies have split there games into 3 different sections, with three different price ranges – very much like Villa do at Villa Park.

Villa have been put in the highest group along with Liverpool and Manchester United while the two derby games are only in the second group along with games against the likes of Everton and Chelsea.

I can understand why they have done this in one way because they know that Villa will sell there allocation regardless, so they would want to make maximum profit from the game, while Blues have struggled to sell there home tickets against us in the past two derbies because of apparent high prices.

New Reserves League Layout.

The club have today announced that the reserve side will compete in the new look Reserves League for the 2010/11 season. We will be in the Southern League along sides the likes of Chelsea, and Arsenal.

The new look groups will look as follows:

Southern Group: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Northern Group A: Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Wigan Athletic.

Northern Group B: Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, Everton, Liverpool, Sunderland.

At the end of the season the winners of the two Northern groups will play each other and then the winner of that fixture will go on to play the winner of the Southern group to define the ultimate reserve league champions.

Dunne a doubt for Wednesday

Dunne a doubt for Wednesday

Richard Dunne is a doubt for Wednesday nights clash with Sunderland.

Dunne limped off in the Wolves game after aggravating his Achilles problem.

The former Manchester City star’s ever-present record in the premiership since signing for Villa is now under threat.

As the big run of games start to take their toll on our squad I’m asking the question, would this be such a bad thing anyway?

Don’t get me wrong, I like Dunne as much as the next fan, but we have been vulnerable at right back for some time now and surely this would be Luke Young’s opportunity to regain his place in the starting line up?

Carlos Cuellar could then move into the centre and play alongside James Collins.

And Martin O’Neill stated that Gabriel Agbonlahor is once again a doubt for Sunderland:

“His groin wasn’t too bad but he stubbed his foot in training and opened up the ligaments in the joint which was a real blow for him and for us,”

And if this is the case Martin, have some balls and play Nathan Delfouneso alongside John Carew, or just play one up front.

Emile Heskey and John Carew can’t play together and Carew’s on a rich vein of goal scoring form so he can’t be dropped.

Villa drop points at home to Wolves

Villa drop points at home to Wolves

To say Wolves were unlucky to walk away from Villa Park yesterday would be an understatement.

Martin O’Neill may refuse to comment on John Carew’s first goal stating that some decisions made by the referees have gone against us, but I will admit that the goal was offside and we was outplayed by a side fighting to stay in the League.

It’s very rarely I criticize any of our players or the management but yesterdays result and the way we performed changed my views on a few things.

If Martin doesn’t believe in Nathan Delfouneso then he should have brought in another striker in January. When you are behind and are trying to come back in Emile Heskey, regardless of your opinions on the player – isn’t the kind of forward you want on the pitch.

Not because of the lack of goals he scores, but because of how deep he plays, we needed a fast striker who was going to play on the last man, and both Carew and Heskey don’t do this.

Villa took the lead just after the 15 minute mark when Carew converted an Ashley Young cross, which shouldn’t have counted due to offside.

However, it wasn’t long before the away side hit back. David Jones played the ball into the Villa area, and although Ronald Zubar completely miss-kicked the ball, Jody Craddock made no mistake in putting it past Brad Friedel in the Villa goal.

And Wolves soon doubled there tally. Again David Jones broke into the Villa area, this time releasing to the overlapping Matt Jarvis, and he attacked the ball, only for James Milner to make a last ditch tackle, but the ball went into the Villa net.

The second half it was all Villa, and Martin O’Neill even withdrew Richard Dunne so Villa could go 5 in midfield to match Wolves, and Steve Sidwell also replaced a very below par Stewart Downing.

And then with 8 minutes left to play, Villa finally equalised from Carew. Heskey’s flick found substitute Sidwell, who shot towards goal, and Carew pounced to equalise for Villa.

Villa could of also found themselves going on to win the game when Craddock clearly pushed Milner in the box in extra time, but the referee dubbed Phil Dowd in disguise by the Villa faithful said no.

I fear that this result might have just closed the door on the top four for Villa. If you can’t beat a side like Wolves at home, then you don’t deserve to be in the top four.

Sunderland are next up on Wednesday night at Villa Park and Villa will need all three points if they want any chance of that Champions League spot. A win on Wednesday night will see Villa beat the Mackams three times this season.

Davis and Bouma continue there comeback

Davis and Bouma continue there comeback

Last night Curtis Davis and Wilfred Bouma continued their comeback to first team football in a reserve match which sore us thrash Wolves 3-0.
The game was probably much closer than the score line suggests but the important part was for Davis, and Bouma to come through unscathered.
James Collins (2) and Harry Forrester got the goals for the away side as the Villa Reserves continue their good form this season.
The reserves are currently sitting pretty at the top of the table as they aim to retain their title.
Moustapha Salifou also featured in this game, his first game since the incident with the Togo national side in the Africa Nations last month.
It was a good result for Villa, as Wolves had a very strong side out.
