Villa drop points at home to Wolves

Villa drop points at home to Wolves

To say Wolves were unlucky to walk away from Villa Park yesterday would be an understatement.

Martin O’Neill may refuse to comment on John Carew’s first goal stating that some decisions made by the referees have gone against us, but I will admit that the goal was offside and we was outplayed by a side fighting to stay in the League.

It’s very rarely I criticize any of our players or the management but yesterdays result and the way we performed changed my views on a few things.

If Martin doesn’t believe in Nathan Delfouneso then he should have brought in another striker in January. When you are behind and are trying to come back in Emile Heskey, regardless of your opinions on the player – isn’t the kind of forward you want on the pitch.

Not because of the lack of goals he scores, but because of how deep he plays, we needed a fast striker who was going to play on the last man, and both Carew and Heskey don’t do this.

Villa took the lead just after the 15 minute mark when Carew converted an Ashley Young cross, which shouldn’t have counted due to offside.

However, it wasn’t long before the away side hit back. David Jones played the ball into the Villa area, and although Ronald Zubar completely miss-kicked the ball, Jody Craddock made no mistake in putting it past Brad Friedel in the Villa goal.

And Wolves soon doubled there tally. Again David Jones broke into the Villa area, this time releasing to the overlapping Matt Jarvis, and he attacked the ball, only for James Milner to make a last ditch tackle, but the ball went into the Villa net.

The second half it was all Villa, and Martin O’Neill even withdrew Richard Dunne so Villa could go 5 in midfield to match Wolves, and Steve Sidwell also replaced a very below par Stewart Downing.

And then with 8 minutes left to play, Villa finally equalised from Carew. Heskey’s flick found substitute Sidwell, who shot towards goal, and Carew pounced to equalise for Villa.

Villa could of also found themselves going on to win the game when Craddock clearly pushed Milner in the box in extra time, but the referee dubbed Phil Dowd in disguise by the Villa faithful said no.

I fear that this result might have just closed the door on the top four for Villa. If you can’t beat a side like Wolves at home, then you don’t deserve to be in the top four.

Sunderland are next up on Wednesday night at Villa Park and Villa will need all three points if they want any chance of that Champions League spot. A win on Wednesday night will see Villa beat the Mackams three times this season.

Next up, the dingles!

Next up, the dingles!

The dingles are heading for Villa Park tomorrow to face a inform Aston Villa side.

Not only does Villa boast an 8 game unbeaten run in the league, they also boast one defeat in 16 games in all competitions this year. And then to add insult to injury, we haven’t lost to Wolves since 1980, 15 games.

If I’m quite honest, I fully expect it to become 16 games as of 3pm tomorrow afternoon. Villa are on form while, Wolves are fighting for their lives to stay in the Premier League.

The only doubt for Martin O’Neill for this game would be Gabby Agbonlahor who went of the pitch against Wigan with a groin problem, but he is expected to start.

Just like Villa, Wolves have no fresh injuries and should welcome back Chris Iwelumu, and midfielder Dave Edwards.

For me this game isn’t quite the derby game it’s made out to be. I think Wolves fans see it as more of a derby than Villa fans do, but regardless we want to win to keep on the toes of the chasing pack for the Champions League Spot.

So tomorrow we support Villa, and then keep an eye on what’s happened at the Britannia Stadium, where Stoke host Tottenham, here’s to a Stoke win.

Avillafan.com Prediction: Home Win.

Preview: Aston Villa v Burnley

Preview: Aston Villa v Burnley

Burnley travel to Villa Park tomorrow to take on an Aston Villa side that are yet to lose in 2010, however four of Villa’s five in this time have ended in draws.

While Burnley have only managed a single point away from home this season and conceded a massive 38 goals on their travels – the worst in the Premier League.

With Villa playing Palace in midweek, three days before the cup final there are questions to what players will play, and who will be rested. And the side Martin picks will show his intentions for the season.

Gabby Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey are still question marks but both have trained this week. Stiliyan Petrov will continue to captain the side despite carrying nagging ankle and Achilles problems.

Burnley are expected to welcome back Leon Cort who’s been out with a groin strain. Veteran Graham Alexander, missing for the last three weeks with a calf problem, is rated 50-50 to return.

Stephen Jordan (hamstring) and Chris McCann (knee) could come back into contention but Steven Caldwell (groin) is still sidelined.

With Villa still chasing a top four spot and Burnley wanting to get out of the bottom three this has the potential to be a very good game; however I think Villa will come out victorious.

When you walk out of Villa Park after drawing with the Premier League Champions and you hear people moaning amongst themseleves that we didnt win, you know how much Villa have come on over the years.

But then again, if someone said to me, or even any other Villa fan that we would get four points from Manchester United this season, i know we would of snapped there hands of there and then.

It was a bitterly cold night at Villa Park with snow lying on the grounds, but the fans still turned up in there numbers. Must say i was pretty surprised Manchester United never sold out there full allocation, I dont think I’ve ever seen that before.

Villa took the lead after 19 minutes when Stewart Downing crossed the ball, it defelected of Rafael’s foot onto Carlos Cuellar’s head who then looped it over Edwin Van Der Sar.

United were soon down to ten mean when Nani was sent off for a two footed tackle on Stiliyan Petrov. Many said it was harsh, but im pretty sure it says in the book that any two footed challenges mean your off.

The lead only lasted four minutes though when some a wonderful passing goal resulted in a James Collins own goal.

It wasnt the most of entertaining games after the opening half hour. Villa had a shout for a penalty when John Carew was brought down by Jonny Evans in the box, and Wesley Brown was the last man when he took down Richard Dunne when he surged forward with the ball.

But I think the end result was probably a fair result and both sets of fans left the ground in good spirits, especially when they heard that results elsewhere had gone both teams way.

Crowd Rating: (5) – The atmosphere at Villa Park this season as been very poor and last night was no different.

What a game we have at Villa Park tonight, a Carling Cup Final Preview, Aston Villa vrs Manchester United.

Since Villa’s historic win up at Old Trafford earlier in the season Manchester United have only lost one league game since, and that was away at Craven Cottage.

While Villa on the other hand look solid at the back at the moment, with four clean sheets in the last four games.

Teamnews for Villa see’s Emile Heskey very doubtful with a groin problem which could see a start for John Carew, while Stephen Warnock is still out.

I wish i could say for Manchester United, Wayne Rooney is suspended but it simple isnt the case. The only player they are missing is Rio Ferdinand who will be serving his third game from his four match ban. Nemanja Vidic could play some part and play his first game in 2010.

If Villa manage a victory over the Red Devils it will be there first League double over Alex Ferguson’s side in 55 years.

Its going to be a very hard game and when you have in my opinion the best player in the World in your side, in Wayne Rooney anything is possible.
