Aston Villa – The year 2009!

Aston Villa – The year 2009!

The year 2009 has been a up and down season for all those who follow the boys in claret and blue. We all remember the dreadful run that blew our champions league chances last season, in which we eventually finished 6th.

The summer sore the arrivals of Fabien Delph, Stephen Warnock, Richard Dunne, James Collins, Habib Beye and Stewart Downing as Martin O’Neill continued to splash the cash trying to build his own squad that wouldnt just compete in the premier league, but on all cup fronts to.

Things looked already for a good season out in Spain when Villa managed to beat Juventus on penalties in the final to become 2009 Peace Cup winners. Many young players shined including Marc Albrighton.

The start of the season started with a defeat to Wigan on the opening game of the season and being knocked out of the Europa League. All of a sudden all the optimism that fans had after the Peace Cup win seemed to have gone and there was even some call’s for Martin O’Neill’s head.

Then Villa headed up to Anfield when they made everyone in the Premier League stand-up and take notice as they beat the Reds 3-1 in there own back yard.

The results continued to come which included a home win over Chelsea and our first league win over Manchester United at Old Trafford since 1985.

As we approach the new year we currently lie joint 5th in the Premier League, in the Semi-finals of the League Cup and we are still in the FA Cup. What more could we really want?

All in all a decent year for Aston Villa Football Club – lets hope a even more successful 2010 which will hopefully see Villa become League Cup Champions.
