Thomas Sørensen was the first choice goalkeeper when he signed from Sunderland in 2003. Villa had to fight of a handful of clubs for the big Danes signature after his former club Sunderland were relegated.

Since the loan signing of Scott Carson, Thomas is now considered third choice goalkeeper and looks set to leave the club soon.

Before Aston Villa

Thomas first broke onto the proffesional scene back in 1995, when he got into the first team of Denmark outfit Odense BK. While there he had loan spells at league rivals Vejle BK, and then onto Svendborg fB.

When Peter Reid signed him back in 1995, no-one outside of Denmark had hardly ever heard of the lanky goalkeeper. He helped Sunderland to gain promotion back to top flight football with a new club record 29 clean sheets.

Sørensen was first introduced to English football when Sunderland boss at the time Peter Reid snapped the goalkeeper up for just £500,000, and became one of Reid's greatest ever transfer signings.

He has gained a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the premier league, specially after breaking Sunderlands clean sheet record in his first season in English football.

International

Sørensen made his first appearance for his country Denmark in 1999, replacing the injured legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.

It took him three years to become the number one goalkeeper for his country when Schmeichel had retired. In 2002, he helped Denmark qualify for the 2002 World Cup. However, Denmark only managed to get to the second round of the competition when England beat them 3-0 and he was at fault for one of the goals.

From 1999 to 2007, the goalkeeper had represented his country 64 times and is still playing for his country.
