Wilfred Bouma signed for Aston Villa just before the end of the international transfer window, on the 31st August 2005 for £3.5million. He was well known by many when he signed from his time with PSV Eindhoven and for his country Holland.

Bouma struggled to settle in at first finding the pace of the premier league game hard and also suffered a few injuries. As a result when Martin O'Neill took over at Villa Park Bouma lost his place, as captain Gareth Barry was moved to the left back position.

Thats when we began to see the best of Bouma, he began to fight for his position back in the starting eleven and eventually established himself at the first choice left back. He is a very determined player who never backs out of a tackle. He is now a big fans favourite at Villa Park.

Before Aston Villa.

Wilfred joined PSV Eindhoven on a Youth contract in 1994, and went on to make his first appearance on the 26th October 1995 against Willem II, in which his team lost 2-1.

He didnt feature in the first team for a while and was soon loaned out to MVV Maastricht where he went on to score 7 goals in just 18 appearances.

In 1998-99 he impressed while out on loan at Fortuna Sittard, and then he was called back to PSV Eindhoven when he went on to become a well known hard battling defender.

International.

Wilfred Bouma made his international debut against Rebublic of Ireland on September 2, 2000.

He also played in the central defence position at the European Championships in 2004, under Dick Advocat.

At the time of writing Bouma has represented his country 32 times, scoring 2 goals.
