José Ángel Crespo joined Sevilla FC’s youth system in 2003, spending two years in the club’s youth ranks before progressing to the club’s B team in 2005. He also made his first team début in December 2005, against Getafe CF. He appeared in two more La Liga games that season but had to wait until 2007 to feature more regularly for the first team.
It is believed that Aston Villa officials first expressed an interest in Crespo in December 2008, when he was performing well.
In July 2009, Crespo moved to Real Racing Club de Santander on a season-long loan, making thirteen appearances for the team before being released by Sevilla FC.
Crespo then joined Italian side Calcio Padova for the 2010-11 season, scoring once in forty-three appearances.
In July 2011 Crespo moved to Bologna FC 1909, where he was frustrated by limited playing time.
He then spent time on loan to Hellas Verona FC in 2012-13 before joining Córdoba CF on loan the following season.
Crespo made twenty-nine appearances for Córdoba CF in 2014-15, when he enjoyed his best season even though his club finished rock bottom of La Liga by some distance and suffered relegation.
On 27th July 2015, José Ángel Crespo became Tim Sherwood’s seventh summer signing when he joined Aston Villa Football Club for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £500,000, signing a three-year deal.
Determined and committed, the right-footed twenty-eight-year-old can play in a number of defensive positions, making him a versatile addition to the Aston Villa squad.
Crespo has represented Spain at U19, U20 and U21 level.
