Not many people can say that they was able to play for the team they watch as a boy but Ian Taylor did. The lifelong Aston Villa fan used to stand on the steps of the Holte End to watch his heroes in claret and blue so it was no real surprise when he became a fan favorite at Villa Park.
It wasn’t just the fact he was a Villa fan that gave him the special affinity he had with Villa supporters, it was his hard working effic and he always wore the shirt with pride.
In 1994 Ian Taylor (currently playing for Sheffield Wednesday) was in the stands as he cheered on Villa to a 3-1 victory over Manchester United in the League Cup final. Just two years later he was on the pitch scoring one of the goals in the 3-0 thrashing of Leeds United in the same competition.
Taylor didn’t score many goals (28 to be exact) but when he did they tended to be important ones. He showed his love for the club a few days after Christmas in 1994 by scoring on his debut in front of the Holte End in a 3-0 victory over Chelsea.
Ian rated that as one of his all time favorite goals, only matched by the goal he scored at Wembley in 1996.
The powerful midfielder had two more trips to Wembley in 2000, the FA Semi-Final against Bolton and the Final against Chelsea.
All in all Ian Taylor made 290 appearances for his boyhood club and will forever more be a legend in the eyes of the Aston Villa faithful.
John Barron: Ian is Mr Aston Villa. He played for the shirt and showed guts, passion and determination. Oh and goals!
Pete W: One word – passion. One of us, took his chance to live the dream and ran with it. Aston Villa through and through.
