Gordon Cowans

Legendary Aston Villa player Gordon Cowans has confirmed his diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's disease in a statement.

'Dear friends and supporters,' started Cowans.

'In an attempt to stop speculation and misinformation about my health, I have decided to release the following statement.

'After a series of recent tests, I have been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease. Medication has been prescribed, with some life changes, which I intend to commit to fully, the prognosis is a good one.

Very sad news though we read from time to time that advances have been made in treating if not actually curing this cruel illness if caught early, so I hope that Sid can enjoy life for many years yet.

One of the greatest players to ever wear the shirt, it was an honour to meet him in the Addies a few years back after all those years of the absolute pleasure in watching him play.

Played football against him twice when I was a nipper. Quality player and a really nice guy. Sad to hear this.
