Time for change ?

Did anyone see that our recently published loses of over £60 million included a payment to Lerner of over £30 million ? the damage done by him and Xia cannot be fixed in one summer.

We've been chasing our tails with short term plans of either trying to stay up or get straight back up for so long that a long term plan is exactly what we need.

This team drives me crazy, I've criticised Smith but our biggest problem has been individual errors, largely by young players who will hopefully improve. Relegation was always a strong possibility and we all knew it.

So while I fully understand the desire to sack Smith I see a long term plan whereby he and the bulk of this squad come back up all the stronger and wiser for the experience of this season...or we could sack him and hope to sign Rafa who seems a favourite option on here, despite the "clueless" Bruce having a better points per game ratio this season.

Its my big worry but i read something today that made me realise that maybe I am being a little harsh. Its our first year back in the Premier League and if we average around 1 point a game, we sh

I am not totally sold on Dean as manager, nice guy, but maybe a bit affable for me.....but he needs more time, However, I think 4-3-3 with our squad has been naive, 3-4-3 looks a bit better. Howe

Welcome to the forum Rocky. Fully agree with your post...I hate sacking managers, it does take time and I also have major doubts about Dean's suitability but really hope he proves us wrong.

A report in the Telegraph has suggested both Smith and sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch could face the axe if they suffer another heavy defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

We've taken a look at what Villa chief executive Christian Purslow has said about Smith, during the manager's stay at Villa Park.

I like the majority of this team as characters. The lack of fight bothers me. We roll over and die so easily.

I agree that we cant rebuild so quickly but we made the decision to release so many players and re-invest despite going down before doing something very similar.

I just cant see them sacking Smith, personally.

Sorry but I can’t agree

jt is undermining dean smith. Jt got Danny Drinkwater in  also pitchach and Suso have failed dean smith. . He has got players in based on money ball and they are not good enough. , get shot of jt by the way our defence coach that refuses to budge on zone marking that does not work. Also Suso and pitchach should go. . Dean smith will stay and rebuild us in championship with his players. . IMO

I also think a lot of these players show promise and that there are similarities to the last time we went down but several of those players are now doing well elsewhere which is why I think patience is required.

As for the released players, who was worth keeping ? I think we had to do what we did and decided to take a punt with an eye on being in a strong position to come straight back up should the worst happen this season.

Ultimately a manager is only as good as his players, we wouldn't be talking about selection or tactics but for a multitude of individual errors that a manager can do nothing about, other than sign a better player and that takes time.

I've made a similar point on numerous occasions, if we keep sacking "clueless" managers we are likely to be having this same conversation in 2030.

Released players? I would have maybe considered keeping players with experience like Whelan and Jedinak. Neither would have played but neither has someone like Lansbury and I would have put money on them both accepting short term deals with lower wages (less combined than Lansbury)

Lansbury will be gone when his contract expires, like so many others in recent years for no fee after costing a few million and hardly ever playing.

We are drifting into what I'm discussing on the WHAT WOULDYOU DO ? thread I started, don't know if you want to merge that with this one.
