  1. I don't think there is any point in comparing ourselves with the likes of Sheff Utd which is a very different situation to ourselves. Sheff Utd is a well oiled system built over a number of seasons. Our promotion was a result of an unexpected and exceptional run of form. We lost half our team and the reality is to have any chance of being competitive we had to spend what we did. I still feel we will stay up and anything else was always going to be a bonus. Today was the first day we took a real hammering which was worrying though Leicester are red hot and the form team at the moment. I felt we were naive and played into Leicester's hands and we must respond to this. Wesley is really hindering us upfront and Smith seems completely unwilling to give Kodjia a chance which I can't understand, equally McGinn should at the very least be subbed on occasions as he looks a little off the pace. Let's see how the next much more winnable fixtures go.
  2. We never really got going here, probably one of our poorer displays though like all our performances against big teams we could have nicked something and nearly did at the end. Some of the reactions online were hysterical (not on here), I saw some Villa fans write Konsa off already which is ridiculous. While some of the play into Wesley isn't great he really isn't doing enough and looks shot of confidence, he really needs to be more physical and stop falling down so easily. It seems that Smith for whatever reason doesn't trust Kodjia.
  3. Contracts don't mean very much these days and I'm sure there is all sorts of clauses. Smith has the makings of one of the best managers in the country in my opinion so why not try and provide as much stability as possible within the club. I like the way it was done, no major fuss. If you weren't a Villa fan I doubt you'd have even heard of this contract extension. The club appears to have a very clear vision and for the first time in a long time we are running really smoothly with no silly promises.
  4. We were really excellent at times yesterday and while I was disappointed we didn't take all 3 points I'll take that especially with our horrendous record there. Grealish was outstanding again and they were no better then some of the championship teams hacking him down. As a few have already mentioned Mings really needs to cut the sloppy play out of his game, it's happening too often.
  5. I'd agree with that Freddy, I just don't think we can afford to leave him out in home games or where we expect to have most of the possession. His link up play with Grealish seems telepathic at times. Grealish was on a different level last night, a joy to watch a player of his quality at Villa and I really enjoyed the entire team performance last night. Credit to Konsa who I thought did well last night. Young defenders will always have a rash moment or two like his wayward clearance but the makings of a really good player. Wesley worked hard but should have buried Hourihane's cross and he needs a goal again.
  6. Yeah it really feels that way, biggest game of the season so far.
  7. Huge game this, feeling strangely confident especially with Grealish back. Would be very worrying if we can't win this. Hope the "sob on the tyne" banner makes an appearance 🤣
  8. Really flat and disappointing display. I thought our fans were also very quiet, yes the game was poor but still. So many players were non existent, Luiz particularly light and ineffective. McGinn way also way off what he's capable of. Traore and Doherty terrorised our left though Targett/Taylor needed more support. In fairness to Trezeguet while far from great and not helping back enough he was the only one who looked like he could produce something. No doubt the injuries really disrupted us and at least we caused a few problems near the end.
  9. Quite right, proud of the effort and commitment against City and Liverpool in particular but now we need to put points on the board again.
  10. Hope we field a pretty strong team but absolutely bring a few fringe players in and rest one or two who may need it. Atmosphere should be electric, would like us to go for this and given their schedule with Europe you could forgive them for making a lot of changes.
  11. What a great win today, delighted for Smith. It all came together so well and fair play to Wesley making a lot of us eat our words with a superb display, that's the hunger, finishing and hold up play we want to see. I also think Hourihane deserves a special mention, the team has improved greatly and looks much more balanced since his return. Goal, assist and won a peno today, he always comes up with big moments that win games yet some Villa fans moan about him "not dictating". It also seems to have free'd Grealish up, delighted to see him score too and he's such a wonderful player to watch. Targett has also made a big difference, hopefully he can stay injury free and continue to progress.
  12. Delighted with this win and even if it's only the league cup will do us good.
  13. Agree with what has already been said, embarrassing against a p*ss poor Arsenal side. Players on the pitch and Smith have to take huge personal blame for this one. We could all see it coming with how deep we went, we invited them on and even had the chance to learn our lesson after we got back to 2-1. El Ghazi was a disaster again, the Elmo sub invited pressure on and encouraged Arsenal. Hourihane should have been brought on very early in the second half for some calm and composure in midfield. The switching of a key midfield starting position between Hourihane to Luiz to Nakamba is just crazy stuff at this level. Wesley regardless of his goal was terrible again today. We looked good when we got at them and they looked very shaky, we should have have finished them off and kept control of the ball better. Instead we panicked again and decided to try and hold out against 10 men. Make no mistake about it that's a shockingly bad Arsenal team, complete embarrassment to cave against them and the last 2 performances are relegation form. A long way to go, not calling for heads or anything daft but we really need to start learning lessons and not go so negative when we are winning, it doesn't suit us. Some of the players can get better too you would hope with more games.
  14. Very disappointing, we need to be winning matches like that if we're to stay up. The game was there for the taking but we played with fear and nervousness. No cutting edge upfront and Wesley isn't doing enough. I'm bewildered that Hourihane continues to be overlooked, would have been perfect to introduce in this game. Subs were far too late.
  15. Worst performance of the season but absolute robbery from Kevin Friend. He should be dropped immediately and Villa should make an official complaint. Really bitter pill to swallow, absolutely disgraceful decision from Friend but he'll be delighted that he was the centre of attention again.
