Villa’s Men of Mystery

With a season upon us, many fans have enquired who I feel will be key to Aston Villa having a successfully campaign next season.

I thought I would choose a player or two from each position.

Brad Guzan

The American goalkeeper was re-signed by Paul Lambert in his new vision for the club. I have to say, it was a master stroke from the Scotsman. Many would say Benteke kept us in the Premier League last season, but Lambert having the balls and dropping Villa’s number 1 Shay Given for him was a good move in many Villa fans eyes.

Even when Villa went through that tough spell over the festive break, many keepers would of buckled under the pressure. But Guzan went on & got stronger with each game from then on. The former MLS keeper pulled off a number of world class saves, which made him for me one of the best keepers in the league if not the best of last season campaign.

Jores Okore

Okore signed for Aston Villa on a four-year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £4 million. The former FC Nordsjælland will be remember for his individual performance against Chelsea in the Champions League.

The Danish International has the pace of a striker but a mature defensive head on his shoulders. He will a player which can prove now & for the future of the club.

Antonio Luna

Luna or as many fans have nicknamed him ‘Tony Moon’ has been one of Villa’s best players during pre-season so far.

Many have already called for Lambert to replace him with left back Joe Bennett. His pace & ability to break forward & get back had Villa fans wowed whilst away in Germany.

Luna will certainly have fans howling at the moon if this lad plays well.

Matthew Lowton

The Chesterfield born right back joined Villa as one of Lambert’s signings for less than a million pound & became a key figure in Villa’s starting 11.

Lowton again went on from from strength to strength. Not only scoring a blinder from Swansea, a ‘worldly’ against Stoke putting us a step closer to survival but became one of the clubs most consistent players.

If Lowton can continue his form into next season, there is no questions that he would be fully deserving of an England call up.

Ashley Westwood

The English midfielder came into his own in the second half of Villa’s Campgiain last season. Already being dubbed the new ‘David Platt’ Westwood has come on a long way from playing football with Crewe.

Ashley’s vision for a pen point pass & bossing the midfield & controlling it has made him fully deserving of his new deal with the Villans.

Leandro Bacuna

Leandro came into a Villa side really out of the blue. His signing came from nowhere & to be honest not a lot is known about this young lad. But what we do know watch back through footage of the Germany tour is he can run at defenders & able to swing a ball in like Ashley Young used to.

He is definitely one player fans should keep an eye on next season.

Andreas Weimann

Andi was another key member of Villa’s season just gone with Paul Lambert. The Austrian footballer had a good partnership going with forward Benteke. Andi will be remember for his goal againist Man Utd as well as Liverpool.

Yet another member of the new contract club, Andi showed that hard work & dedication to the cause, will get you reward for all your hard work.

Nicklas Helenius

Helenius signed for Aston Villa on a three year deal believed to be in the region of £1.2m. Nicklas has already scored two goals in his first three games during pre-season whilst away in Germany.

If many are lead to be believed that Benteke is set for a move away from Villa Park, I could say Nicklas would not have any issues playing up top or before another forward. His skills & touch remind me of a young Robin van Persie and we have not seen the best of him yet.

How do you feel about the players above? Who do you think Villa should purchase once the likes of Benteke, Bent, Bannan, Given & Ireland are all moved on?

  1. If Benteke and the other players mentioned leave we would be looking at a good amount of money to spend. I would hope that the money would be spent on a player that has some experience, I know it is against Lamberts ways but I think it would be nice to have a big name on the team to draw more attention to the club. I am not saying these are the players I would want but someone like Mario Gomez or Chrstian Erikson would be a good fit in my mind.

  2. Alex you have the right idea, but those two in particular are never going to happen. at least not for this season. a more realistic option would be Dempsey, Sigurdson, or maybe Scott Parker in my opinion
