Another week has passed in the transfer window and more and more players continue to be linked with a move to Aston Villa. Here is a breakdown of some stories in the rumour mill during the last seven days. I give you my take on whether I think they are suitable or not.
Macauley Southam Hales.
Macauley Southam-Hales is a twenty-two-year-old right back who currently plays in the Welsh Football Leagues for Barry Town. He used to play in midfield but was converted into a full-back so you would hope he was decent on the ball. Something Dean Smith seems to look for in a player.
He is a product of the Cardiff City academy and will be eager to get back into the professional ranks. Reports in the East-Anglian Daily Times have stated that Barnsley, Villa, Bolton and Ipswich Town have expressed an interest.
I imagine this signing would be a cheap one which shouldn’t affect any FFP issues that we may or may not have. Would he be able to make the step up? It’s unclear. He has impressed for Barry this season who are currently top of the Welsh League at the moment.
The big theme this week seems to be with lower league sides. Something Smith has looked at in previous management jobs. Chad is reporting that Villa has sent scouts to watch Mansfield Town winger CJ Hamilton.
Hamilton came through the academy at Sheffield United. He has had loan spells with Halifax Town and Gateshead before signing for Mansfield in 2016.
The twenty-three-year-old has contributed to seven goals and assists so far this season in all competitions. Mansfield boss David Flitcroft has expressed his desire to keep his winger but admitted every player has their price.
The rumour is that Hamilton could be the first player Mansfield could sell for more than £1million. Although he sounds like he has potential, do Villa require another winger at the moment? Especially after Andre Green was recalled today.
It wouldn’t be a rumour round-up without a link to a Chelsea youngster, would it? Charlie Colkett is the latest from the Chelsea academy to be linked to Villa.
The twenty-two-year is reported to be in the middle of a tug-of-war between Villa and Swedish side Ostersunds, according to The Mirror. They claim it could be an initial loan deal with a view to signing on a permanent transfer.
The midfielder has had loan spells with Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town, Vitesse and more recently Shrewsbury Town. He was recalled recently having only made one appearance for the Shrews.
Bit of a strange link. Another squad player maybe?
Another goalkeeper. Really? I hear you ask. Yes, nineteen-year-old Dimitar Sheytanov is the latest goalkeeper to be linked with a move to Villa Park.
The picture with John Terry on his personal Instagram has only added to the rumour. The story first started in his home country from news outlet Sportal. With the number of goalkeepers at the club currently, it does sound like a strange one.
The final link I will touch on is Romanian midfielder Darius Olaru. His agent Arcadie Zaporojanu spoke to Gazeta Sporturilor recently and revealed that Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund were expressing interest.
“I was in England,” he said. “I gave Aston Villa a few references about him, figures and everything they needed. So far they have not made an official offer to Gaz Metan.
“They want to get as much information, see matches with him and make a clear idea.”
