Big January needed.

Smith prevented the so called Karma stories

It feels like it has been said a lot this season. At the end of each month, we approach the next one knowing that the new month would be important to our season. January is no different. It is big for Aston Villa’s season.

After what has been 2 very disappointing draws against Preston and Queens Park Rangers, it is clear to all fans and hopefully Dean Smith that some business is needed for us to compete this season. There are many ways in which our squad needs strengthening in the January transfer market. I am hopeful that Smith has recognised this also and is ready to act.

The first and most obvious area of our team is the defence. We undoubtedly need a new left back. Neil Taylor needs competition and also cover for when he is unavailable. Alan Hutton is not a left back by any stretch of the imagination.

A central defender is also required. It has now been confirmed that Axel Tuanzebe underwent surgery and will be missing for around 2 months. With Tommy Elphick being recalled we now have 2 central defenders at the club. If one was to pick up an injury or suspension then we could find ourselves in trouble.

Reports have emerged over the last 24 hours that Villa has had a bid accepted for young Wolves defender Korney Hause. An addition I would welcome to the team.

Some would even argue that a new right-back is required. However, I feel that we have enough options here. James Bree is one or we could always recall Ritchie De Laet.

Grealish is set to miss JanuaryA creative midfielder would also be a bonus. It is clear from the recent games that we are not as dominant in the team without Jack Grealish. Our midfield has gone missing too much recently. Teams are counter-attacking us and scoring too many goals. Although some would point towards the defence, I feel that the midfield need to offer more protection.

Despite his goals, Conor Hourihane looks lost recently. It could be tiredness or down to a lack of competition. Birkir Bjarnason has recently returned from injury but he does seem to be a game or two away from the next injury.

There are rumours circulating that Wolverhampton Wanderers want Tammy Abraham. With some media outlets going as far as stating that they have made an £18million offer.

I am unsure how true this is. Can he play for another club after playing for both Chelsea (Charity Shield) and Aston Villa this season? If there is anything in this story and Abraham opts to leave Villa then we will need a replacement. He is now the league’s top scorer and we would be a lot lower than 10th without him.

Although I feel we need to strengthen, It is vitally important that we are shrewd in the market. We can’t just splash the cash for the sakes of it. We have been there before and it didn’t work how well a lot of the time.

Where do you think our main area to strengthen is? Have your say in the comments below.

  1. As far as I know the Charity Shield is technically considered a friendly so wouldn’t count as a competitive game and unfortunately Tammy could go on to play for another club 😔
