Christmas is less than a week away but for football fans, the excitement is also set to begin. The January transfer window opens in a little over a week. Just like every transfer window, there will be plenty of speculation, good and bad. The speculation that is worrying me the most relates to Tammy Abraham and the sacking of Jose Mourinho. Let me explain.
Abraham is being linked with a £10million move to either Newcastle United or Crystal Palace. For me, this is a snip and if we could buy him for that then I would be looking to snap off Chelsea’s hands at that price. However, due to his excellent form for ourselves, Chelsea may even look to have him back playing for them. They could certainly do with him.
I wouldn’t like to lose him and I am sure I am not alone with those thoughts. The club must be prepared for either outcome however and put in preventative measures should we lose our top goal scorer.
A possible replacement that springs to mind is a player that Smith knows well, Neal Maupay. The twenty-two-year-old Frenchman’s statistics read well for this season. He has scored thirteen goals and picked up six assists in twenty goals so far this season. He would be a good acquisition to our team if we do lose Abraham.
Manchester United recently decided to sack Jose Mourinho. This is a worry for any club who currently have a player on loan from United. Especially loan players who are performing like Axel Tuanzebe.
Now, I personally think that with his excellent form, we wouldn’t be able to keep Tuanzebe behind this season. United would be silly to not at least give a player of this quality an opportunity at first-team level. Don’t get me wrong, I would love him to become a permanent fixture at Villa but I am being realistic.
With a change of managers at United, it does worry me that Tuanzebe could be recalled in January. They are in desperate need of strengthening their defence and their fans were outraged when he was allowed to leave on loan in the summer. With a temporary manager being placed in charge, they may not want to spend money so may look to exploit the players they already own. I really hope they don’t. We are already short at the back and he is a player of real quality.
I guess only time will tell.
