Collins decision NOT made

Various reporters and media outlets reported last week that James Collins had been offered a five-week contract with Aston Villa. Today, Villa boss Dean Smith has quashed any rumours of any deal of the sort.

It is not to say that Collins will not be offered a deal in the future. But for now, the former Brentford manager doesn’t believe Collins is at a standard that he expects.

Smith said: “He’s still training with us. He’s not had the match exposure that I would want. He’ll continue to train with us until I feel he’s up to the standard where we can make a decision one way or the other.”

More proof that most of the media don’t actually have a clue, eh?

Defenders needed

Tuanzebe and Collins would be ahead of CollinsThere is no real secret that we are light in the defensive department. I personally believe that Smith will use Collins until January. Should we pick up an injury or suspension to either Axel Tuanzebe or James Collins then he could have his hand forced?

The fact Collins has been with the club for some time now and still hasn’t actually been offered a deal speaks volumes for me.

Some Villa fans expressed their displeasure with the potential signing last week. Collins was said to be part of a disruptive group during his first spell with Villa. And it seems those fans have not forgiven him.

Youth given chance

Smith chose to pick Dominic Revan on the bench for the 0-3 win over Middlesbrough last weekend. Villa fans have always stated that they wanted a manager who would give our youth a chance. On the face of things, Smith seems happy to do this.

It could have been so easy to give Collins a short-term contract and throw him on the bench last week. The confidence boost it would have given Revan would have been priceless and if he has anything about him then no doubt he will want to taste more.

Smith said of Revan: “Dominic is someone I feel can help us defensively if we need him. He’s got a little bit of pace, he’s comfortable on the ball and he’s impressed all of us since he’s been training with us.”

Maybe it’s not the fact that Collins is up to the standard. Maybe it’s just the fact that the youngsters are impressing him more?
