There have been plenty of rumours of late that Burnley keeper Tom Heaton will be allowed to leave in January on loan. The usual media outlets have suggested that Aston Villa will be amongst the clubs strongly interested.
We all know how transfer rumours work. Club has a weakness in their side and a player becomes available. Most links these days have no substance to them and are literally reporters putting two and two together. But has this story got something to it?
EFL pundit Sam Parkin believes that Heaton will be heading to either Villa or Leeds United. Speaking to the Total Football League podcast he stated:
“There are rumours abound that Villa and Leeds are interested in a new goalkeeper. Leeds might need another goalkeeper, not that I don’t rate Bailey Peacock-Farrell who had a good game at the weekend but I do think he’s a slightly weak link there.
Tom Heaton at Burnley. Bristol City won’t be getting him. It will be either Villa or Leeds if Burnley decides to let him go. I think it’s all dependent on the fitness of Nick Pope and when he is able to be involved at Burnley. I’m pretty sure one of them will get him and that will be a big leg-up. He will instantly upgrade Villa and I think Leeds.”
Heaton has suggested recently that he is keeping his options open. Burnley have three goalkeepers with Joe Hart and Nick Pope also in their squad. He was in the England squad before his injury so it is easy to see why he wants to be playing.
He told the Mirror: “Come the January transfer window, I’ve got to keep my options open. The one thing I’ve been consistent about in my career is moving clubs in order to play games.”
Heaton will be 33 in April and the thought of moving clubs to play football doesn’t seem to be an issue for him. It is unclear if Villa would look at a loan or a permanent deal if they actually want him?
Does Smith want Heaton
Villa have made it clear that they will be active in the January transfer window. Sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch has told the media that players will be coming and going. He is a believer in working and getting the most out of what you have though.
Orjan Nyland is currently Villa’s number 1 but he has had a shaky start to his Villa career. A lot was made out of him not making a single save in the recent 5-5 draw with Nottingham Forest.
Smith has always defended the Norway goalkeeper, however. It is unclear if Smith generally believes in him or if he’s a front as he makes do with what he has. For now.
