A lot of people are still focused on the World Cup but I thought I would take a look at the Championship season next year and share my predictions. You may feel that it is a little early but the idea is to come back to this article just before the season starts to see how my predictions have changed due to the transfer window and for Aston Villa themselves.
I have tried my best to remain non-biased throughout and hopefully, you can see why I have chosen certain teams to finish in certain places.
CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE PREDICTION
1. West Bromwich Albion (as much as it hurts me to say)
2. Swansea City
4. Aston Villa (high hopes)
5. Stoke City
6. Derby County
7. Norwich City
8. Leeds United
9. Bristol City
10. Nottingham Forest
12. Sheffield United
13. Ipswich Town
14. Hull City
15. Sheffield Wednesday
16. Birmingham City
17. Queens Park Rangers
19. Bolton Wanderers
21. Preston North End
22. Blackburn Rovers
23. Wigan Athletic
24. Rotherham United
Due to the position we currently find ourselves in, I can’t see Villa going up automatically but I still have faith that we can push for a playoff position again this season. At the time of writing, we still have a pretty strong squad.
Integrating some of the younger lads from the youth setup and bringing in 1 or 2 loan signings could help us along. Of course, we don’t know where we stand financially going into the season so that is something else we need to take into consideration.
West Brom will have the parachute payments flying in so will be able to invest heavily just like we did in our first season in the championship. I can’t help but feel that they will be more sensible than we were and do the business that will see them get promoted.
Darren Moore seems to have turned that club around in the short space of time he has been there. At times last season they looked like Villa did in the year they went down but they went down on a decent run and he will look to build on that momentum.
I’ve gone with all the newly promoted teams to drop straight back down as I just don’t think they will have what it takes to survive in the Championship. I would like to see them surprise me however and give the league a big upset but again I just can’t see it happening.
One team it might be worth watching is Nottingham Forest who have done some decent business so far this summer, on paper anyway.
I will come back to these predictions a little closer to the season and see if my mind has been changed at all. In the meantime, let me know what you think of my predictions and leave your own in the comments section below.
