Protecting the core

Kodjia lost the number 26 shirt to Terry.

After Aston Villa, unfortunately, failed to pinch the last place in the Premier League, there has been lots of panic regarding the circumstance surrounding our players. Rumours have been doing the rounds as usual and they suggest that the some of the big boys are planning on tearing our squad to shreds but it is vital we protect the core of our squad.

Players such as Jack Grealish, Birkir Bjarnason, James Chester and Jonathan Kodjia have all been linked with moves away but we need to keep these players in order to have a core to build on for the coming season.

Grealish is vital to the core of this squadOut of all of the players mentioned, Grealish is the most desirable, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham all expressing interest in the midfielder. If Grealish does leave Villa then this could have catastrophic effects, as he was arguably our player of the season. He is an integral cog to the Villa machine and if we lose him then we could see a breakdown.

Another player vital to our team’s core is James Chester. It is rumoured that Brighton is interested in the Welshman but a formal offer is yet to be made. Chester has been a solid defender for us over the last 2 seasons and after the loss of John Terry, it would be a disaster to lose Chester as well.

You could add Iceland international, Bjarnason to the list. He could very well be our holding midfielder next year, many people’s heartbeat of the team. He has proved that he is more than capable this season and at times it has been a myth as to why he hasn’t started. He has been linked with a move abroad, but Bruce should try to keep the midfielder at Villa Park as he can play a vital role next season.

Finally, Bruce may be forced to cash in on Kodjia to ease our financial difficulties. As Grabban was only a loan deal, Kodjia will more than likely feature as our main striker next season so we shouldn’t be looking to sell. If he needs to go for money’s sake then we can’t do much about it but if he is around next season it will make it a lot easier for Bruce and hopefully he can get back to his peak at Villa.

Our core is going to need to be strong next season if we want to compete again and have this we need to keep our main assets. Do you think these 4 players will leave? Let me know in the comments section.

  1. There are too many players on massive wages, a decent chairman would not have
allowed this to continue. XIA,and Bruce combined have brought this club to the brink
of bankruptcy. Only a take over and new manager can rectify the incompetence of these
two clowns. There has to be a cull of certain players before any are sold to balance the books.
No more in, clear out the Dead Wood who have contributed nothing, ship out the Dads army
Bruce keeps shipping in. Finally Dean Smith in asap
