Over the last 24 hours, we have come to realise just how important the playoff final was to this football club and how we may be unable to invest as much as we would like to in the playing squad. As a football club, we need to try our very best of what we can and turn any negatives into positives and making the most out of what we have.
It is so easy to look at the negatives and point out that we have lost a big part of last season’s first-team squad. Losing the likes of John Terry, Robert Snodgrass and Lewis Grabban would be a massive loss to any Championship squad but we may have players who are ready to take their opportunity and step up.
One of these is the goalkeeper, Jed Steer. He is a perfectly capable goalkeeper as he proved away at Colchester in the cup, saving a penalty and making some other great saves to help us win the game. I know it won’t be the same as having Sam Johnstone in between the sticks but Steer is still a good keeper and could definitely do a job in the championship next year.
Another player who can hopefully step up to the plate is Andre Green. The youngster had a good start to the season before he injured, but hasn’t featured since. Albert Adomah can play on the right and Green can play on the left and he can potentially fill the hole that Snodgrass will leave. He is still young, quick, exciting and when he is on the top of his game he can strike fear into any defence. He is one who would love to make up for lost time and make the most of any opportunity given to him.
I could keep listing players who have impressed at under 23 level but I will name one more and probably one supporter felt should have been given more chances last season, Callum O’Hare.
With talk that Jack Grealish will have to be sold this summer the youngster will want to make a case for being given a chance in the first team. He impressed throughout the 2016-17 season at u23 level and earned a couple of first-team chances in cup competitions. He has already been compared to Grealish with his quick feet and his ability to create chances out of nothing. Hopefully, he can make the step up and show everyone what he is about.
As hard as it may be right now, we need to try and remain positive and ensure we are making the most out of the players we currently have at the club. Do you think all hope is lost or can we make it back to the Premier League at the third time of asking despite all that is being thrown at this football club right now?
