Villa v Preston – Preview

Aston Villa vs Preston North End
Sky Bet Championship
19:45 – Tuesday 20th February 2018
Villa Park, Birmingham

Aston Villa will be hoping to return to winning ways against Preston North End following their first defeat in eight against Fulham over the weekend.

Steve Bruce’s men have been in good form recently and will be hoping the weekend result was no more than just a blip. Villa surrendered the automatic spot to Cardiff and will want to regain the position as quickly as possible.

Preston are no slouch themselves and are on a six-match unbeaten run in the Championship which has seen them move to 7th in the table, just three points outside the playoff positions.

Villa beat Preston 2-0 in the first game between these two when they met back in November.

Albert Adomah will be out for a ‘while’ according to Steve Bruce as he will almost certainly miss the game tonight. Jack Grealish and Ahmed Elmohammady are also doubts.

Andre Green broke down in his comeback and has a hamstring injury and although Jonathan Kodjia has returned to light training, he is some way off. Gabriel Agbonlahor could return to the matchday squad.

Manager Alex Neil will have Gregg Cunningham and Ben Pearson available after they both missed the 1-1 draw with Wolves at the weekend through suspension. John Welsh is unavailable following his red card in the Wolves game.

Paul Gallagher and skipper Tom Clarke will both face late fitness tests while Sean Maguire continues his comeback from an injury picked up in November but it is thought this game has come too soon for him.

  • Villa has only lost one of their last 16 home encounters against Preston in all competitions, a 1-0 defeat in November 1968 (W11, D4).
  • Preston has failed to score in seven of their last 10 games against Villa.
  • Saturday’s defeat to Fulham was the first time Villa had failed to score in 10 Championship fixtures.
  • Preston has lost one of their last 16 Championship matches (W7, D8).

There are still tickets available with around 31,000 expected at Villa Park. Preston has sold 600 tickets but will have the option of paying on the gate.

Adults tickets are available from £20, Under 16’s from £5. Purchase tickets here.
