As we approach the end of the Championship season, we find ourselves sat in 3rd position with 14 games remaining, meaning that we need to treat each and every game like a cup final.
After a difficult weekend at Craven Cottage which saw us lose 2-0 to a good Fulham side, our 7 game winning streak was brought to an abrupt end.
We can not let this phase us, as we have slipped out of second place and need to climb back into that automatic promotion spot. The team who replaced us in that second spot are Cardiff, who we are still yet to play at home. A win against Cardiff in one of those cup final’s will put promotion back in our hands and that is what we need.
One player who will be vital in our cup final’s is Jack Grealish. He was ruled out of the game against Fulham due to injury and this clearly hurt the team, as we lost for the first time in 7 games. There is yet to be much news on whether he is fit and ready for the Tuesday night affair against Preston, but it will be a much more challenging game if he is once again ruled out.
Our top scorer Albert Adomah was also forced out of the team at Fulham due to injury and the fact he is top scorer speaks for itself in terms of the importance he holds in the squad. Unlike Grealish, it looks like Adomah may be missing for a while which does give an opportunity for someone to step up and make that position his own.
We then travel away to Sheffield Wednesday in the game after, which is also going to be a tricky game. They are having a woeful season and have even offered fans season ticket refunds however they are looking over their shoulder with relegation in their thoughts so just like us, they have their own cup final’s but with a different result.
We still have some huge games to play in Wolves, Derby, Leeds and these are going to be the deciders in our season. If we can manage to pull some good performances out of the bag in these games then we can hopefully pick up points and put ourselves in the best position for that automatic spot.
An uninspiring performance at Fulham has made many Villa fans doubt our promotion chances but we need to remain calm and have faith in the boys because there will be many more ups and down before now and the end of the season.
