Aston Villa vs Barnsley
Sky Bet Championship
15:00 – Saturday 20th January 2018
Villa Park, Birmingham
Aston Villa will today welcome Paul Heckingbottom and his Barnsley team to Villa Park today for today’s Championship game.
Steve Bruce will be hoping that his side can build on their recent form having won their last three fixtures without conceding a goal. This is the kind of game that Villa usually makes a big deal out of. You know, the comfortable home fixture where we are heavy favourites. Let’s hope we don’t!
Following the draw between Derby and Bristol City last night, a win for Villa could see them move to within three points of the automatic spots.
Barnsley tends to be a good on the eye football side who try to play football as we found out last season. The reverse fixture this year saw Villa come away with a comfortable 3-0 win. More of the same please Villa?
The Tykes will fancy themselves today as they arrive on a four-game unbeaten run that includes an impressive draw with table-toppers Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.
Mile Jedinak (thigh) and Glenn Whelan (knee) could both be in contention for a place in the team today as they both returned to training this week.
Backup goalkeeper Jed Steer has been ruled out for some time after going under the knife for a should injury while Bruce confirmed that Jonathan Kodjia is back in rehab but it is unlikely that we will see the striker again this season.
Barnsley is expected to welcome back midfielder Lloyd Isgrove who missed last weekends game with a dead leg. It come’s a good time for the manager who will be without Gary Gardner who is on loan from Aston Villa so is unable to play.
The Tykes will also be without Joe Williams (suspended), Angus MacDonald (illness), Ryan Hedges (thigh), Andy Yiadom (ankle) and Adam Jackson (knee).
- Villa has failed to beat Barnsley at Villa Park in 46 years. The last victory came in a 2-0 win in 1972.
- Barnsley have only won four of their last twenty league away games.
- Villa are eleven points better off than they were at this stage last season.
- Andy Hammill has created more goalscoring chances this season without an assist than any other player in the division (39).
There are still tickets available with around 32,000 expected at Villa Park. Ipswich will bring around 1,500 supporters with them. They only took an allocation of 1,847 and will be selling tickets on the gate.
Adults tickets are available from £20, Under 16’s from £5. Purchase tickets here.
