I know people don’t want to get too ahead of themselves with our excellent current form but we need to recognise that we have secured a maximum 9 points in our last 3 games and we are closing in on the top 3 teams. In the last week, we have gone from 5th to 4th and narrowed the gap between 4th and 3rd place to only 2 points.
Following our first home loss of the season, we had a difficult away game at QPR, who had just beaten Wolves and Sheffield United at home. We went 1-0 down early on and many feared the worse, however, two goals from the man of the moment, Albert Adomah, saw us make a great comeback, and win the game 1-2.
We then had a must-win game at home to bottom of the league, Sunderland. Although this wasn’t the greatest of performances, another goal from Adomah and a goal from Josh Onomah helped us to a consecutive 2-1 victory to keep our upturn in form going.
Four days later, we welcomed Ipswich Town to Villa Park. This was always going to be a difficult fixture as Mick McCarthy always sets his team up so they are hard to beat but a double from Adomah allowed us to take all 3 points and move within 2 points of 3rd place Sheffield United.
As the chant went on Saturday, “Albert Adomah, he’s scored more than Blues”. He has been simply unstoppable of late and when an individual is scoring more goals than entire clubs, you know you’ve got a player in good form on your hands. We need to keep playing to the style that suits Albert and who knows? He may just double his tally of 10 goals so far this season.
It’s all well and good picking up and a good run of results, however, we need to carry our good form on into December. Our first game is a very tricky away trip to Elland Road, the home of Leeds United (Live on Sky Sports this Friday night). I would’ve said there’s no chance since this is both away from home and live on the box but with results like 0-3 away at Barnsley, 0-2 away at Preston, and 0-4 away at Burton, I think we have every chance of picking some points up at Leeds.
If we play like we did against Ipswich, with our quick counter attacks and strong defending then we could cause Leeds some problems and If big Keinan Davis and young Onomah can continue with their good form then they could make the Leeds defenders wish they had never turned up.
Consistency is huge, and we need to keep putting in big performances if we want to be in and around the automatic promotion places come the end of the season. Where do you think we will finish this season? Let me know in the comments section down below.
