Colchester United v Aston Villa
Carabao Cup – 1st Round
19.45 – Tuesday 08 August 2017
Weston Homes Community Stadium, Colchester
Aston Villa head to League 2 side Colchester United in the first round of the Carabao Cup (League Cup), live on Sky Sports.
The dust has started to settle on an opening day draw with Hull City and Villa supporters have begun looking forward to the rest of the season. Of course, the players will need to have their minds firmly on tonight’s game with Colchester United if they want to avoid a repeat of the embarrassing defeat to Luton Town in the same competition last season.
The hosts kicked off their season with a 3-1 defeat to Accrington Stanley but they did have a pretty impressive home form last season so will be looking to repeat the shock result that Luton sprung on Steve Bruce’s men last season.
Colchester has included new loan signing Kyel Reid in their squad and the Coventry winger will be looking for a place in the starting line-up. Defender Tom Eastham is a doubt after he was substituted in the weekend defeat with an ankle injury.
Luke Prosser, Brennan Dickenson (both knee), Doug Loft (back) and Kurtis Guthrie (ankle) are all unavailable for the home side.
Steve Bruce will most likely rest a few that featured in the opening day draw with Hull so that could allow on-loan Tottenham youngster Josh Onomah to his first start for the club.
There are no fresh injuries for Bruce to contend with.
- The two clubs have only played each other three times. Colchester won the last meeting 2-0 but Villa progressed on aggerate score and penalties.
- Steve Bruce has not lost a first time round since 2000/01 season while he was Huddersfield manager.
- This is the first time Aston Villa have played in round 1 of the league cup since 1972/73.
There are less than 100 tickets available for Aston Villa supporters. Aston Villa took the biggest allocation they were allowed of 1,958.
Personally, I would phone the ticket office for information on remaining tickets.
