It looks increasingly likely that Aston Villa is set to make their first transfer move of the summer and what a big one it would be. Speculation has long been gathering around John Terry and whether he will slot into the back four for Villa next season. The rumours have gained weight after Terry was once again seen playing golf with manager Steve Bruce.
Terry is 36 years old, quite an age for a footballer who was still donning the Premier League. On the 1st July, his contract and 22-year spell at Stamford Bridge will come to an end. He made just 15 appearances last season throughout all competitions and in his own words would like to make room for the younger players who are coming through the ranks at Chelsea. At the same time, Terry plans to continue playing football for as long as possible.
Since it became clear that he would be leaving Chelsea, quite a few teams have had their eye on the Blues superstar, including Swansea, Bournemouth and West Brom. Terry has already turned down an offer with Tianjin Quanjian, a Chinese Super League team who were alleged to offer him £10 million a year in wages.
The most likely team to snap up the former England international seemed to be Birmingham, yet more recently it seems that Aston Villa has turned up the heat and put in an offer for the defender. Harry Redknapp has now confirmed that the offer has been made and Villa owner Tony Xia refused to rule out the move, saying “I am not going to talk about a player who is still at another club.”
A couple of weeks ago the defender was seen playing golf with Villa boss Steve Bruce and his son Alex at the Monte Rei resort in Portugal. We can’t be sure that Bruce was aiming to convince him to come to the club, but we can be sure that Terry wasn’t practising his swing in order to play at the UK Golf Open. I don’t think he would keep up with the likes of Dustin Johnson, the current favourite with 8/1 odds on BetStars.
It would appear that the two could be in talks regarding the players future and this isn’t the first time they have been seen on the golf course together. Just a week earlier, the group were seen at Quintado Lago in Portugal.
Aston Villa has made an offer on Terry, allegedly involving wages of £60,000 a week, as well as bonuses of up to £2 million if Terry can help Villa to climb back into the Premier League. Terry is interested in the challenge of playing for a team who are vying for promotion.
The rounds of golf seem to have cemented a relationship between the two and could have swung the negotiations in Villa’s favour, pulling Terry away from Birmingham.
Terry has won five Premier League trophies with Chelsea, as well as five FA Cups and one Champion’s League. He would make a might addition to Villa’s backline and if you believe everything you read then he could well be a Villa player in the next 24 hours.
