Sell to buy? Why the panic?

Steve Bruce has been told that he must sell before he can buy this summer according to reports in the Telegraph last night.

The article was written by John Percy who I respect as a reporter and his articles when Aston Villa are concerned usually have some truth in them.

New FFP rules dictate that clubs can lose up to £83million over three seasons but Aston Villa’s Xia has told Bruce that he needs to sell to buy this summer.accounts in February revealed a loss of £81.3million, leaving Villa dangerously close to punishment.

Some supporters of the club have seen this as a huge blow with some stating that Bruce can’t possibly get Aston Villa promoted without having the power to buy more players this summer but I think that those who think that are completely wrong. Of course, you are all entitled to your opinion but so am I.

Aston Villa knew they had to buy big this season as the squad we had was awful and if we were to have any attempt at any potential immediate return to the Premiership but it wasn’t to be, however,  another rebuild isn’t required this summer.

Steve Bruce has stated he would like to bring in five more players this summer but has made no secret that we need to offload some players – in particular, those currently on loan. Carlos Sanchez has already joined Fiorentina on a permanent deal for around £1-2million if figures are to be believed.

Jordan Veretout and Carlos Gil have both impressed while out on loan and Villa will look to get back roughly what they paid for both of these players. That equates to around £12 million according to

Other players who are expected to be offloaded this summer include the likes of Jordan Amavi, Tommy Elphick and quite possibly Ross McCormack and Aaron Tshibola.

I could go on and start listing other fringe players and u-21 players who will be sold or released this summer. Villa will save money from wages and make money from sales.

This is why I am not concerned by the slightest. The club has a lot of deadwood that needs to be offloaded and this will allow Steve Bruce to buy in the summer market where he feels he needs too.

I felt that this was cleared up in supporter meetings and interviews with Keith Wyness during this season so I find it strange by the over reaction from some supporters.

I still believe we have one of the strongest squads in the division but I do agree that 2-3 new players are required. The biggest task this summer for Steve Bruce was always to buy a new goalkeeper and get the current individuals that he has at the club playing as a team and I don’t see or read anything out there that has changed my opinion on this.

  1. what is the point of having money if you just waste it
we need to get the not wanted players shipped out and target a few players who will
get the best of our expensive underperforming players
richards gil elphic amavi gabby mccormack tisibola golini cissoko veretout sanchez

thats a whole side to be moved on,,,,,,,

maby mccormack will stay but we need to see the big signings start performing
there is the basis of a promotion chasing squad assembled and hopefully next season
we wont have the poor start and disaster that was january/feb due to rebuilding the midfield and losing kodja

  2. plus the defence is settled and should get better if de laet returns and bree kicks on
chester and baker have a partnership that is ok and another season might well see them get better as a unit,,, more so that taylor looks very solid and johnstone has re signed on loan again
another cb will be needed,,, and someone to push adomah on the right wing
and a younger jedi although i still hope lyden will come good

  3. I agree totally we already have a very strong squad and now that we know Johnstone is coming back for the new season, I think if we could negotiate a loan for Tammy Abrahams, sell A few players as mentioned Gil, Veretout, Tshibola, Amavi and possibly Mc Cormack this would generate plenty of funds to allow us to strengthen our squad. I am however concerned about our striker situation we are stuffed when Kodjia is not playing, so I do believe we need to focus on this area, for me the jury is still out on Hogan.
My belief is that whilst at the moment I can’t see us winning automatic promotion next season ( hopefully I will be proved wrong ) I see no reason whilst we wouldn’t achieve the play offs. Just hope our manager is up to the task.
