With just two games to go transfer rumours are starting to pick up by the day and it is no real surprise that Aston Villa is continuously being linked with goalkeeper’s.
Steve Bruce has already stated that he would be interested in a permanent deal for Sam Johnstone who is currently on loan from Manchester United. The 24-year-old goalkeeper has grown in confidence this season making the number 1 spot his own ahead of backup goalkeeper Mark Bunn.
Johnstone has impressed with 8 clean sheets in 19 league game so far for Aston Villa this season, the latest coming in Villa’s 1-0 victory over local rivals Birmingham City last weekend.
Should Bruce struggle to keep hold of Johnstone, his attentions will have to turn elsewhere with Bunn’s contract coming to an end and Pierluigi Gollini just 6 months into an 18-month loan spell at Atalanta.
Football League World believe that Bruce should turn his attentions to Brentford’s £425k rated goalkeeper Daniel Bentley. The 23-year old has impressed for the Bee’s this season collecting 13 clean sheets in 43 appearances.
It is unclear whether or not the former Arsenal goalkeeper would be keen on a move away from Griffin Park and the article is no more than a bloggers opinion. At his age he will be far from the finished article and will have the best years ahead of him.
The problem in question is can we afford a goalkeeper who is still learning or do we need someone with more experience?
Another player being linked with a potential move is 32-year old goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic. Birmingham Mail are reporting that Sky Sports source claim that Aston Villa are one of a number of clubs interested alongside Leicester, Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Watford – three of whom will be playing their trade in the Premiership next season.
The Bosnian born Switzerland international is currently Hull’s number ‘1’ goalkeeper and their Premier League status is still unclear. He has dislodged former first choice David Marshall to be a main stay under Hull manager Marco Silva.
Villa were also recently linked with his Hull team mate Alan McGregor and as I said when I wrote about that rumour. This wont be the last rumour we come across this summer. Sometimes I question why I write about them but despite the fact we all try to ignore them – we cant help but enjoy silly transfer season can we?
