Aston Villa v Birmingham City preview

In Match Previews

Derby day rivalries will be reignited when Villa host bitter rivals, Birmingham City on Sunday.

The game will be the first time the two teams have met in the league at Villa Park since 2010 and with Villa Park a sell-out the atmosphere is sure to be hostile come noon.

Bruce’s boys will be looking to bounce back from two defeats in a row over the Easter period, that ended the club’s five matches unbeaten run that gave Villa fans a sense of optimism going into next season.

A sense of optimism is something Blues can only dream of. A run of nine games without a victory has seen Villa fans delighted and Blues fans nervously thinking of life in the third tier of English football for the first time in 25 years.

They have called on Harry Redknapp to be their saviour after they slipped to three points off the bottom three after a 2-0 defeat to Burton Albion.

For his first game in charge, Redknapp has an almost fully fit squad to choose from with only two players missing, Michael Morrison (groin) and Clayton Donaldson (knee).

Goalkeeper, Tomas Kuszczak returned to training in the week after missing Blues’ defeat to Burton and should go straight back into the starting line-up.Jonathan Kodjia will be suspended for the game against Birmingham

Villa, however, will be missing key man Jonathan Kodjia. The Ivory Coast international was sent off in Monday’s defeat to Fulham and will serve his one-match ban on Sunday.

There could be better news for Villa though with Andre Green, Neil Taylor and derby day specialist, Gabriel Agbonlahor all fighting to get into the starting line-up after returning to full training this week.

Match Stats

  • Villa has only lost one of their last 11 clashes with Birmingham City.
  • The Villans have won two of their last three home games with the Blues, 1-0. The other one finished goalless.
  • A draw or defeat on Sunday would mean Blues would equal their longest run without a victory this season, 10.
