Bonne chance, Rémi!

The look on Rémi Garde’s face said it all as the final whistle blew at White Hart Lane. The new manager had witnessed another meek performance from Aston Villa as Tottenham Hotspur cruised to victory on Monday night. Goal-scorer Jordan Ayew and Carles Gil were the only men to really stand out and the manner of Villa’s defending for the Tottenham goals echoed the sloppy and haphazard defensive play that has been a constant all season. Garde certainly has a tough job on his hands.

Aston Villa Football Club remains rooted to the bottom of the table and although relegation looks more likely with every passing game, the situation facing the new Villa manager is not impossible. Only five points separate the Villans and sixteenth-placed Norwich City and much will depend on Garde’s ability to galvanise the squad ahead of Manchester City’s visit to Villa Park on Sunday. Garde’s appointment could see a refreshing change to the Villa line-up with players picked on form and ability rather than reputation and many of the French contingent could be given starts. Jordan Ayew and Jordan Amavi should be given a lengthy run of games after impressing at times this season and it would be nice to see Carles Gil and Adama Traoré given more game time to showcase their ability to create chances and cause problems for the opposition defence.

In his first interview as Aston Villa manager, Garde has stated that he feels that the Villans have been ‘unlucky’ in many games this season. Whilst we haven’t been thrashed yet this season, there have been too many games in which we haven’t looked like troubling the opposition goalkeeper or have allowed a lead to slip with yet more poor defending. Whilst a change of luck would be welcome, it would be nice to see the team attack with the same gusto that they seem to at 2-0 down.

Rémi Garde has got a huge task on his hands to keep Aston Villa in the top flight: only three teams have avoided relegation from the Premier League when faced with the same situation. Things can’t get much worse for Villa fans right now and Garde needs time to be able to exert his influence on the players. Sunday’s home fixture against Manchester City is a daunting opener for the new manager but the subsequent international break will provide the new boss with a great opportunity to work with his new squad.

Bonne chance, Rémi!
