Aston Villa v Manchester United – opposition view

In Opposition Views

Our first home game of the season is fast approaching and it is sure to be a belter as Tim Sherwood’s new-look side takes on Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United under the floodlights at Villa Park.

I spoke to @MUFC_social‘s Martin Peart ahead of this evening’s game.

1) Lots of money has spent by Louis van Gaal this summer but who are you still missing?

Many United fans will argue that we need a centre back. For me, we need a twenty – thirty goal a season centre forward. Wayne Rooney has been given the task this season of getting United the goals. I just don’t see that killer instinct in him any more. We saw that on Saturday: the Wayne Rooney of five years ago would have hit that ball first time. United need an out-and-out number nine.

2) Describe Louis van Gaal in three words.

Stubborn, arrogant (in a good way), philosopher.

3) What are your thoughts on Tim Sherwood?

He is a very honest manager and coach. He seems to know how to get the best out of the players at his disposal. He did an excellent job at the end of last season. In my opinion, any manager who can get one over Liverpool in the FA Cup will get the thumbs up from United fans.

4) Who is the man Villa fans should watch out for on Friday night?

I would say Ander Herrera but it’s highly unlikely he will start: as I said before, Louis van Gaal is a stubborn manager. I think Memphis Depay will be one to watch as I think he will be the player to light the Premier League up this season if utilised correctly. If given space, he can be lethal from range and he is very quick. Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw will also cause a lot of problems, overlapping on the wings. If they can both stay fit they give United another dimension going forward.

5) Who is Manchester United’s weak link?

With David de Gea’s future being uncertain, our goalkeeper Romero is a weakness as he parries his shots. He looks shaky on set pieces and if Villa target him with Gestede we could have serious issues. Daley Blind at centre back is also a concern due to his pace and height, not to mention that he isn’t a centre back.

6) Would you have liked to have seen Christian Benteke at Manchester United?

No: I wasn’t a fan of his attitude. A lot of times I watched Villa play Benteke would go missing in games and I really don’t think he was worth the money Liverpool paid for him.

7) How can you see your season panning out?

I can’t see United winning the title: I just think we lack goal-scoring firepower. I expect us to challenge on all fronts and progress well in all competitions. United should be aiming for a good cup run after last year’s FA Cup disappointment.

8) What is your match prediction?

I think United will get the win. We will have a lot of possession. I’d say Aston Villa 0 – 1 Manchester United, with Juan Mata or Memphis Depay to score.

Extra Time:

9) Football Manager or Fifa?

10) Vodka or Jäger?

It’s craft ale for me.
