Is Tim keeping tabs on Townsend?

In Transfers

A story that first emerged in ‘The Daily Mirror’ says that we are interested in Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend. The England international already knows Tim Sherwood due to the fact that Sherwood used to be the manager of Spurs, meaning that persuading him to join shouldn’t be an issue for the Villa boss. Townsend is apparently valued at £15 million, which is a considerable sum, but we do seem to be splashing the cash recently and, let’s face it, we can afford it given the increased television revenue alone.

I think Townsend would be a great signing for us. He would bring some flair to the team and help to create some goal-scoring opportunities for our new forwards. I don’t think we desperately need him in our squad, as we have already got Scott Sinclair, but he would certainly be worth signing. Townsend has also reportedly attracted interest from Newcastle United and Sunderland but I think joining Aston Villa would be a more appealing move for him, as we are closer to London than the aforementioned clubs, and the fact that Sherwood is our manager may give the club a better chance of attracting him to B6.

As a fairly young player, Townsend has the best years of his career ahead of him so it would be a very good time to splash the cash on him because if we do and he plays well for a couple of years, we could be selling him on during his peak years for a lot more money than we paid for him. He is also quite experienced for a player of his age, having had loan spells at a range of teams as well as playing for Tottenham Hotspur.

Townsend has all the attributes you’d want to see in a player in his position. Attacking is the player’s speciality and he has the pace and strength to be useful in the final third, where he can beat the opposition’s defence. He can put the ball in the back of the net himself but I think assisting our strikers and creating chances for them to score is what Townsend would do best in our squad. As an England international, Townsend is a proven footballer so I don’t think we would have to worry about him performing poorly. At £15 million, expectations would be fairly high but I am confident that Andros Townsend could live up to them.

With just under three weeks left in this transfer window, anything could happen.

  • There’s one thing keeping watch & another actually signing a player . But would we need Townsend if we sign Toure & Balde ?

  • “I don’t think we desperately need him in our squad, as we have already got Scott Sinclair, but he would certainly be worth signing.”

I just don’t understand this. Is Scott Sinclair going to play every minute of every game and play on both the right and the left?? I think Sinclair works in a 4-2-3-1 and, if we play that formation, we will also need someone to play on the right. However, it does appear that we are in for Traore, and with Gil and Bacuna also able to cover that position, I would think that if we sign him we should be adequately covered on the wings.

I think we then need to focus on a right back and, possibly, another striker if there is any money left over.
