Where will the goals come from?

A new year has begun and brought with it the seemingly endless transfer rumours.

Looking at our squad and the teams that Lambert is currently fielding, it is clear to see where our problem lies. There has been much discussion on Twitter and on the forums about our lack of goals so I thought I’d look at who, if anyone, would be a feasible acquisition to help us start netting again.

We have Benteke, of course, who on his day can bang them in from anywhere. However, he cannot be expected to be firing on all cylinders every game so who can help him create and convert chances?

Before looking elsewhere, who do we already have, apart from Benteke?

Gabby Agbonlahor

Our longest serving player, and someone most of us love, has never been prolific. Although we can be thankful that he has scored some vital goals for Villa over the years, he is not the exciting and unpredictable player who used to scare defenders. His conversion rate is poor and he looks like he’s getting too comfortable, sometimes appearing not to be trying as hard as he could be.

Andi Weimann

Weimann is someone who always tries hard but can be ineffectual too much of the time. Often resembling a headless chicken with the ball at his feet, I can’t fault his passion and commitment but the end product just isn’t there enough of the time.

Libor Kozak

Although he looked quite slow and laborious at times, he popped up with some crucial goals last season, which is exactly what we need now. Let’s hope he can continue that goal scoring knack when he finally returns from injury. I’ll be crossing my fingers, hoping that Clark doesn’t break his (or anyone else’s) leg in training again. Hurry back, Libor!

Who could we potentially bring in? These are not players we have necessarily been linked with but simply ones I think could give us a hand in the goal-scoring and creativity departments.

Jermain Defoe

The former Tottenham, West Ham and Portsmouth striker is a proven Premier League front man who has often been linked with us in the past. His high wages and age could be problematic but even if he joins Aston Villa on a short term loan the former England man knows where that net is and could, like Robbie Keane under McLeish, be good for a few points.

Joel Campbell

Joel Campbell is struggling for first team action at Arsenal and proved what a promising player he is in the Champions League for Olympiacos last year and for Costa Rica at the World Cup in the summer. He needs to move to a club where he will be appreciated so he can flourish; there is no doubting that he has a brain and can create chances.

Saido Berahino

This isn’t necessarily a serious suggestion but Berahino’s the kind of player we should be looking for – someone who is good enough and looking to make a step up but won’t be good enough for a top team. I realise there are those who would question whether moving from West Brom to Villa is a step up at present. If he joined Spurs, the likelihood is Berahino would not get as much game time as he would at a club like Aston Villa. His celebrations, or lack thereof, the other day, suggest he’s on the way out of The Hawthorns but where is he headed?
