Is A Cup Run What We Need?

With Aston Villa Football Club’s first cup game of the season only a day away, anticipation is high, although it remains to be seen whether or not the Villans can have a good cup run this year. The first test comes as Aston Villa face Leyton Orient at Villa Park tomorrow night in the second round of the Capital One Cup.

Last season, Villa fans had to make do with very underwhelming League Cup and FA Cup runs from their side. Aston Villa’s run in the League Cup last season was uninspiring to say the least. It kicked off with a promising home win against Rotherham but it soon came to an end after losing 0-4 to Tottenham Hotspur a month later. The Lions also bowed out in their first FA Cup game last year – a third round match at home that resulted in a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Sheffield United.

Let’s face it: the football in the last few years has been fairly disappointing for Villa fans to watch so something to cheer about would be nice. I am sure nobody has forgotten the heartbreak and embarrassment of losing in the League Cup semi-final to Bradford during Paul Lambert’s first season in charge. However, if we hadn’t had the League Cup run at all and had gone out at the very start then what would we have had to smile about at all that season?

With many young players looking to break into the first team this season, the cups could be vital for the likes of Jack Grealish and Callum Robinson and help them to get some senior starts under their belts. So far, we’ve only really seen the younger players make bit-part appearances from the bench or starting in friendlies so the cups could be a great opportunity for them to play in competitive games from the outset and really show what they can do. The cup games offer them a great chance to prove to the manager that they are good enough to be in the starting XI on a regular basis.

I think we’ll stay up but I very much doubt our Premier League season will be particularly memorable so here’s hoping that we really make the most of the cup competitions this year and all they have to offer!
