What’s your name and where do you come from?
My name is Akhil Deol and I’m from Handsworth, Birmingham.
When and how did you come to support Villa?
I was pretty late getting into football. I was around the age of ten when I first started supporting Aston Villa. Aston Villa was then my local team as I moved to Lozells and I also loved the colours when watching Aston Villa on television.
What’s your earliest Villa memory?
My first game is something I always remember fondly. We beat Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup, with Juan Pablo Angel scoring a beauty into the top corner.
Describe your lowest point as a Villa fan.
Last season was my lowest point as a Villa fan. I was not very confident we would avoid relegation as the team was conceding left, right and centre and basically relying on Benteke to score in every game for us to have any chance. The manager also didn’t fill many with confidence due to his tactics.
Another low point was losing in the Carling Cup final to Manchester United when Vidic should have been sent off.
What are your thoughts on Lambert’s dealings in the January transfer window?
Pretty poor business really.
Ryan Bertrand has been a surprise as I was not much of a fan before as he seemed like a full back who loved going forward but not going back. He has been fantastic for us though and hopefully we can make this deal permanent in the summer.
Grant Holt, well… At least he is a ‘real man’. I’m not a fan of Holt as it basically means we have to play hoof ball to make him effective in the team. However, his experience will be key on the pitch and in the dressing room.
Who has been the best manager in your lifetime and why?
I would have to say John Gregory. He was the first manager in charge of Aston Villa when I became a fan. We were always riding high in the League in the first half of the season but would always struggle in the second half.
Martin O’Neill was also considered but his exit and the way he overspent on players and wages and then rarely used them has ruined his reputation.
Houllier is another manager who, in my opinion, really could have taken us places had he not had the heart issues.
Should Lambert be given a three year extension to his contract? Why/why not?
No! He has a lot to prove to manage a big club like Aston Villa. His buys have been pretty poor and his tactics are shocking. I would wait to see whether we survive relegation this season and then consider it. I do feel that with Lambert in charge we will always be around the relegation zone.
If you could use the tardis and add one former Villa player to the current squad, who would it be and why?
I would say Olof Mellberg as he was a proper centre back and would be an improvement on our defence. However, with Okore back soon, I feel Vlaar and Okore will be reasonably solid (hopefully) so the player I would bring back is Gareth Barry. We lack a leader in midfield and someone who will dictate the game for us as Delph is our only decent central midfielder. I feel we really missed out by not getting Barry back and now Martinez and Everton fans are reaping the rewards.
Which film title sums up Villa’s season so far?
‘Superbad’. The football and the performances have generally been ‘Superbad’, mainly due to a manager who clearly isn’t right for us.
